Listening As a Child
God Speaks to His Children

Pulling the covers tighter to my chin, I closed my eyes–pretending not to see the morning light. Just then the bedroom door flew open as Abigail ran through it, jumped on the bed beside me and wiggled her little cherubic body inside the covers.
“Good morning, Mommy!” Abigail sing-songed as she placed her face as close as she could to mine. Opening one eye I said, “Go make Mommy some coffee, Abby.” Opening both eyes, I watched to see her response.
Abigail smiled and said, “Sure.” Then she sat up very still for a moment before turning toward me again. “Mommy,” she said with a wrinkled up nose and the serious voice of a three-year-old, “I can’t, I too little!”
Of course Abigail was too little to get me coffee, but reflecting upon that precious moment I know the Lord used her to whisper into my heart. We believers respond much the same way when it comes to hearing God’s voice. We think we’re too little, and certainly not like the spiritual giants who hear and walk in great faith. But does it really take a spiritual giant of great faith to hear God’s whispers? No! God does not play with us the way I played with Abigail. He doesn’t ask us to do something we cannot do. Jesus said: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27/NKV).
We can hear His voice because God does speak to His children.

–May we recognize our Shepherd’s voice and follow Him as He speaks in our hearts today.
